Bennett Hayes
My passion for music and technology led me to the field of film and media. Having been a percussionist since age 12, I find that music informs my work in obvious but also, surprising ways. Although I primarily play the drum set and bass guitar, I am proficient in all forms of percussion, including djembe, vibraphone, timpani and cajon.
For two years, I was a professional drummer in the Richmond-based rock & blues band, Infinite Monkey Theorem. This experience not only helped me to become a better musician, but also served as incubator for learning the art of creative collaboration, a critical component of film and media work.
In high school, I found myself producing and editing YouTube channels, short films and podcasts for my friends. Now, as a Film & Media major at the College of William and Mary, my main areas of focus are film production, post-production and sound editing.
When I produce film or sound product, my passion for music and rhythm are most evident in the interplay between visual and sound elements, as well as in the pacing of each production.
In the high-tech world film and media, having intuitive knowledge and skills to understand and master ever-evolving technologically is critical. At age 16, I built my own computer and began teaching myself how to make short films using a drone, DSLR and my smart phone. I produced and edited short films, YouTube channels, and podcasts for friends.
At age 20, I was selected by my professors as one of three interns for the William and Mary Global Film Festival, and have been invited to collaborate with professors on their own productions. I also help coordinate all aspects of media offerings through W&M's Alma Mater Productions, and frequently assist with on-campus theater productions.
At every opportunity, I take part in short film productions at William and Mary, whether my own or someone else's. I'm never afraid to try something new and see where the project goes and what I can learn.
